Title: Forecasting and Revenue Management at Molslinjen, Franz Edelman Award Winner 2024

Speaker:  Simon Cloetta Kristiansen, Partner, Engineering, Half Space

Abstract:

Molslinjen embraced digitalization to transform its operations and business practices, partnering with Halfspace to drive this transition. Together, we developed and implemented a cutting-edge forecasting and revenue management toolbox, enabling data-driven ferry operations across Denmark since 2020. This collaboration reached a milestone in 2024 with the prestigious Franz Edelman Award.

In this talk, I will dive into the journey of Molslinjen and Halfspace.

How we have made Molslinjen more data-driven, how it has shaped our success, and how it continues to drive our collaboration forward

Title: ECCO's Omni-Channel Ecommerce: Leveraging Fulfilment & Return optimization models.

Speakers: Mette Gudik-Schjørring, Operations Research Scientist at ECCO

Henrik Foss Jørgensen, Senior Operations Research Scientist at ECCO.

Abstract:

With the rapid growth of ecommerce reshaping the face of modern retail, maintaining high customer satisfaction through efficient fulfilment, seamless returns, and sustainability has become more crucial than ever. ECCO has risen to this challenge by asking a critical question: Which location should fulfil an order and which should process the return? To address this, ECCO has developed two innovative algorithms for Ecommerce Fulfilment and Product Returns. These data-driven solutions aim to streamline decision-making, minimize costs, prevent stockouts, ensure swift delivery of orders. This presentation will offer an in-depth exploration of these algorithms and their role in enhancing ECCO's ecommerce fulfilment process, while also prioritizing sustainability.

Title: Synchronizing Multiple Resources for Surgery Scheduling: A Stochastic Vehicle Routing approach.

Speaker: Jens Otto Brunner, Professor at Technical University of Copenhagen

Abstract:

Efficient planning in hospitals is critical to maintaining quality of care amid rising patient volumes and staff shortages. This work addresses the operational version of operating room planning, known as surgery allocation scheduling. We aim to create reusable schedules for efficient daily planning based on recurring patient mixes. The problem is modeled as a vehicle routing problem with synchronization constraints, where patients are treated as customers who need to be visited simultaneously by several vehicles. These vehicles represent resources involved in surgeries, such as rooms and medical staff. Resources must be synchronized to ensure that surgeries can be performed smoothly. We develop a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer programming model to incorporate uncertain surgery durations. Exploiting the structure of this large-scale problem using Benders decomposition, we minimize idle time, overtime, and surgery cancelations. We use acceleration strategies that refine the problem structure and enhance cut selection to improve convergence. Numerical experiments show that our approach solves realistic surgery allocation scheduling instances to optimality or close to optimality within a reasonable runtime. Specifically, we can solve approximately 93.1% of our test instances containing up to 18 resources and 18 surgeries within a 1% optimality gap. Our results provide robust and balanced schedules. We highlight the benefits of incorporating synchronization and resource-dependent durations to improve utilization under variable conditions.

Title: Stand and gate allocation for aircraft and passenger: why column generation with shortest path subproblems is the perfect match of accuracy and speed.

Speaker: Josephine Byskov Cornaby, Consultant at Copenhagen Optimization

Jens Vinther Clausen, Software Engineer at Copenhagen Optimization

Abstract:

Allocating aircraft stands (parking spots) and passenger gates to arrival-departure flight pairs is a complex yet critical part of airport operations. Stands and gates both have limitations on what planes they cater to, and airlines as well as the airport itself have preferences and priorities. Effectively and efficiently solving this puzzle is both relevant for long term capacity planning as well as for on-the-day planning where every single flight must be accounted for. This presentation explores how we at Copenhagen Optimization leverage operation research techniques to aid airports in solving this puzzle - more specifically by using column generation with shortest path subproblems, as we have found this to be the perfect match of accuracy and speed.

Title: Robust Optimization: Principles, Advances, and Applications in Humanitarian Logistics and Electromobility

Speaker: İhsan Yanıkoğlu, Professor of Industrial Engineering at Ozyegin University

Abstract:

Robust Optimization (RO) has emerged as a powerful mathematical framework for decision-making under uncertainty, providing tractable solutions that remain feasible under worst-case scenarios. This tutorial will provide an accessible yet comprehensive introduction to RO, drawing insights from key static and adjustable robust optimization methodologies. We will explore how these techniques can be applied across diverse domains, highlighting theoretical advancements and practical implementation challenges. A particular emphasis will be placed on logistics applications, showcasing how RO methods enhance decision-making in humanitarian logistics, vehicle routing, and electromobility-based transportation systems. We will discuss applications in humanitarian relief distribution under uncertain travel conditions, referencing work on robust needs assessment planning, and introduce recent research on electromobility-based vehicle routing, which accounts for range anxiety and charging station availability. Additionally, we will explore how adjustable robust optimization methods can improve decision-making in dynamic and uncertain environments, ensuring more flexible and efficient outcomes. Through this tutorial, participants will gain a deeper understanding of RO techniques, learn best practices for defining uncertainty sets and implementing robust counterparts, and explore emerging opportunities in the intersection of robust optimization and sustainable logistics. The session will conclude with an interactive discussion on future research directions and real-world challenges in adopting robust optimization for large-scale and high-stakes decision-making.
